AMP Research HD vs. Sport: Which Bed Extender fits your F150 Build?
Share
The 5.5-foot "Short Bed" on the 2015–2020 F-150 SuperCrew is great for parking and daily driving.
It is not great for hauling a Yamaha YZ450F, a stack of 8-foot 2x4s, or a full load of camping gear.
You inevitably run out of room, forcing you to drive with the tailgate down and straps crisscrossing everywhere.
The solution is a Bed Extender. These ingenious cages flip out onto your open tailgate to give you 7+ feet of enclosed cargo space. But when you go to buy one, you’ll see two main options from the market leader, AMP Research:
- The BedXTender HD (Max): A big, squared-off U-shape.
- The BedXTender Sport: A sleek, tapered V-shape.
Which one do you need? If you ride motorcycles, the answer is the Sport. If you haul coolers and boxes, it’s the HD. In this guide, we break down the dimensions and specific use-cases for each to help you maximize your bed space.

Frequently Asked Questions (Bed Extenders)
Can I take the extender out easily?
Yes. The beauty of the AMP Research system is the "Quick Latch" design. Once the brackets are installed on the truck, you can remove the entire extender assembly in about 3 seconds by tilting it to a 45-degree angle and lifting it out. This allows you to have a completely open bed whenever you need it.
Does it work with a bed liner?
Yes.
- Spray-In Liners: Works perfectly with no modification.
- Plastic Drop-In Liners: You will likely need to trim a small square of plastic around the mounting holes in the D-Pillar to ensure the brackets mount flush to the metal.
Why is the V-Shape better for motorcycles?
When the extender is flipped out onto the open tailgate, the V-Shape creates a "chock" point in the center. If you load a dirt bike in the middle of the bed, the rear tire nests perfectly into the V, preventing the bike from sliding side-to-side, while the extender arms keep gear bags from falling out.
