BAKFlip MX4 vs. UnderCover Flex: Which Hard Folding Cover Wins?
Share
If you own a 2015–2020 Ford F-150, you've probably narrowed your bed cover search down to one style: Hard Folding.
It’s the most popular choice for a reason. Soft covers aren't secure enough, and fiberglass lids are too heavy to remove when you need to haul a couch. Hard folding covers offer the best of both worlds: security like a safe, and the ability to fold away in seconds.
But now you face the real decision: BAKFlip MX4 or UnderCover Flex?
They look almost identical. They both sit flush. They both fold up against the cab. But the difference lies in the materials. The BAKFlip uses heavy-duty Aluminum panels (premium look, higher weight rating), while the UnderCover Flex uses FRP Composite panels (dent resistant, stays cooler in the sun).
In this guide, we break down the durability, water resistance, and finish of these two titans to help you pick the right one for your truck.

Frequently Asked Questions (Hard Folding Covers)
Can I drive with the cover partially open?
Yes. Hard folding covers typically have buckles at the cab end. You can fold the cover 2/3rds of the way open and strap it down to drive safely. If you need the full bed, you fold it up against the glass and secure it with the prop rods.
Will it block my third brake light or rear camera?
- Rear Camera: No. The cover sits flush and does not obstruct the tailgate camera.
- Third Brake Light: When folded up against the cab (full bed access mode), the cover will block the lower portion of the rear window and the third brake light. However, it does not touch the truck cab paint (rubber bumpers protect it).
How secure is it?
Very. When the cover is closed and your tailgate is locked, the latches are inaccessible. A thief would need a crowbar to pry it open. It effectively turns your bed into a steel vault.
