Borla vs. Corsa vs. Flowmaster: The Ultimate RAM 1500 Exhaust Showdown

You love the power of your 5.7L HEMI, but you hate the sound.

Or rather, the lack of sound.

So you start looking at exhaust upgrades for your 2009–2018 RAM 1500.

You see a Flowmaster kit for $800.

Then you see a Borla kit for $1,300.

And a Corsa kit for $1,500.

They are all 3-inch stainless steel pipes. They all bolt on. So why is there a $700 price difference?

The answer comes down to one word: Drone.

The RAM 1500 has a "Multi-Displacement System" (MDS) that shuts down 4 cylinders on the highway. With a cheap exhaust, this sounds like a broken helicopter vibrating your skull.

Premium brands engineer this sound out. Budget brands just try to drown it out.

In this guide, we compare the sound profiles and drone-canceling technology of the big three—Borla, Corsa, and Flowmaster—to help you decide where to put your money.

Frequently Asked Questions (Cat-Backs)

Why buy a Cat-Back instead of just a muffler?

A muffler swap is cheap, but it leaves the crushed, restrictive factory piping in place. A Cat-Back System replaces the piping with mandrel-bent (smooth) stainless steel tubing (usually 3-inch diameter). This reduces backpressure, lowers exhaust gas temperatures, and delivers a much cleaner, less "raspy" tone than a simple muffler chop.

Will this void my warranty?

No. In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects you. Replacing the exhaust after the catalytic converters (Cat-Back) does not affect emissions equipment or the engine tune, so it cannot void your powertrain warranty.

Do I have to cut my stock exhaust?

Usually, yes. The factory exhaust is often one continuous welded piece from the factory. To remove it, you will likely need to make one cut near the rear axle or transmission crossmember. The new system will then bolt on using clamps. Always check the installation instructions for your specific brand.
