Can I put a Roof Top Tent (RTT) on clamp-on crossbars?
Generally, no. It is highly dangerous.
Clamp-on bars (that grip the inside of your door jambs) typically have a maximum dynamic load limit of around 165 lbs. A heavy hard-shell RTT plus two full-grown adults easily exceeds the static limit of these clamps. Doing this can severely dent your door frames, or worse, the entire rack can slide off during emergency braking. What is the difference between Static and Dynamic load ratings?
Dynamic is moving; Static is parked.
- Dynamic Rating: The maximum weight the rack can safely hold while driving down the highway (e.g., 165 lbs to 265 lbs). This accounts for intense wind force, hard braking, and hitting potholes.
- Static Rating: The maximum weight the rack can hold while the truck is parked (e.g., 600+ lbs). Will adding a roof rack cause terrible wind noise?
