Clamp-On vs. Drill-In: Which Roof Rack is Right for Your RAM 1500?

You ran out of room in the bed.

Between the cooler, the camping gear, and the dog, your 2009–2018 RAM 1500 is packed.

You need to use the roof.

But then you see the installation instructions: "Drill 4 holes into the roof ditch."

Drilling holes in a perfectly good truck is terrifying. What about leaks? What about resale value?

Thankfully, you have a choice.

  • The Clamp-On Rack: Grips the door jambs. No drilling. On and off in 10 minutes.
  • The Track System: Drilled into the roof. Permanent. Higher weight capacity.

Which one do you need?

If you are just carrying a kayak twice a year, the Clamp-On is perfect.

If you are mounting a rooftop tent or carrying ladders every day, you need the Track System.

In this guide, we compare the pros, cons, and weight ratings of both styles to help you decide if you really need to break out the drill.

Frequently Asked Questions (Roof Racks)

Will a clamp-on rack damage my paint?

Not if installed correctly. High-quality systems like Rhino-Rack include rubber pads that sit between the metal clamp and your door jamb/roof. However, if you leave the rack on for years without cleaning under the pads, grit can get trapped and cause abrasion. We recommend removing clamp-on racks when not in use or cleaning under the pads regularly.

Can I put a Rooftop Tent (RTT) on a clamp-on rack?

Generally, No. Most clamp-on racks are rated for ~165 lbs dynamic (moving) weight. While they might hold a tent statically, the forces of wind and off-roading can shift a clamp-on system. For a rooftop tent, we strongly recommend a Drill-In Track System or a Bed Rack for maximum safety.

Will I fit in my garage?

Measure first! The RAM 1500 is already a tall truck. Adding a roof rack system typically adds 4 to 6 inches of height (more if you add a basket or carrier). If you have a standard 7-foot garage door and a lifted truck, you might not clear the opening.
