Halogen to LED: The Ultimate Lighting Guide for XLT & STX Owners

If you bought a 2021–2025 Ford F-150 XL, STX, or XLT, you probably noticed something disappointing the first time you drove at night.

The headlights. They are dim, yellow, and look like they belong on a truck from 2005.

Ford reserves the premium "Signature LED" lighting for the expensive Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims. But you don't have to trade in your truck to see the road. The aftermarket has stepped up with "Halogen-to-LED" conversion assemblies that look better than stock.

But it’s not as simple as just plugging them in. You have to deal with DRL Fuse Taps, Hyperflash Resistors, and the confusing 2024 Facelift split. In this guide, we break down how to choose the right lights for your specific year and trim, and why Projectors are always better than Reflectors.

Frequently Asked Questions (Lighting)

Will these blind other drivers?

  • LED Bulbs in Reflector Housing: Possibly. If you just put an LED bulb in a halogen housing, the light can scatter. You must adjust the beam down.

  • Full Assemblies: No. Complete housings (like Morimoto XB) use Projector Lenses. These focus the light with a razor-sharp "cutoff line" that keeps the beam below the eye level of oncoming traffic.

Do I need to wire anything for the Daytime Running Lights (DRL)?

For most "Halogen to LED" conversions, Yes. You typically need to run one fuse tap wire (included) to the fuse box under the hood. This tells the new "C-Bar" or DRL strip to turn on whenever the truck is running, giving you that signature modern look.

Why don't the 2021-2023 lights fit my 2024?

Ford refreshed the front fascia and tailgate for 2024. The mounting points and the physical shape of the lights are slightly different. While they look similar, they are not interchangeable.
