Hub-Centric vs. Lug-Centric: Why You Should Never Buy Cheap Spacers for Your RAM
Share
You want your 2019–2026 RAM 1500 to have that aggressive, wide, bulldog stance.
You go online and see a set of "Universal Fit" wheel spacers on a marketplace for $40. Then you see a premium set of Eibach or H&R spacers for $200.
They look like the exact same shiny chunk of aluminum. Why on earth would you pay 5x the price?
The difference is absolute Safety.
- Lug-Centric (Cheap & Dangerous): These feature a large, generic hole in the middle. They rely entirely on your lug nuts to center the heavy wheel and support the dynamic weight of your 5,000lb truck. One loose lug nut or one heavy pothole can lead to catastrophic stud failure.
- Hub-Centric (Safe & Engineered): These are precision-machined with a specific 77.8mm center bore and a matching outer lip. They snap tightly onto your RAM's hub, transferring the massive weight directly to the steel axle—exactly as the factory engineers intended.
In this guide, we break down why Hub-Centricity is non-negotiable for half-ton truck owners, and explain the dreaded "1-Inch Rule" that forces many owners to permanently cut their wheel studs.

Frequently Asked Questions (Wheel Spacers)
Are wheel spacers actually safe for towing?
Yes, IF they are Hub-Centric.
A high-quality Hub-Centric spacer from brands like Eibach or H&R physically extends the center hub lip of the truck. The wheel rests directly on this newly extended lip, exactly like it came from the factory. This ensures the massive weight of your trailer is supported by the steel axle hub, not just the lug nuts.
(Warning: Never tow with cheap, generic "Lug-Centric" spacers that leave a gap around the hub).
Will I really have to cut my factory wheel studs?
Highly likely, if you go smaller than 1.5 inches.
RAM 1500 factory wheel studs are roughly 1.25 inches long.
- 1.5" Spacer: The aluminum spacer is physically thicker than the stud. No trimming is needed.
- 1" Spacer: The steel stud is longer than the spacer. It will poke right through. Unless your wheels have deep "pockets" on the back to safely swallow that excess stud, you will have to use a grinder to cut the unthreaded tips off your factory studs.
Do spacers cause high-speed wheel vibration?
Only if they are installed incorrectly.
Vibration usually comes from two specific errors:
- Rust: You absolutely must wire-brush the truck's hub surface perfectly clean before installing the spacer. Even a tiny speck of rust or dirt can cause the billet spacer to sit unevenly.
- Lug-Centric Designs: If the spacer isn't centered perfectly via a Hub-Centric lip, it will wobble violently at 60mph. Always buy Hub-Centric.
