MagneRide Delete: How to Install Coilovers on a GT350 or Mach 1 Without Errors
Share
You own a Shelby GT350, a Mach 1, or a fully loaded Mustang GT.
The factory MagneRide suspension is incredible... until it isn't.
Maybe a shock is leaking out of warranty (and the dealer replacement cost is astronomical). Maybe you want to lower the car further than standard springs will allow. Or maybe you are building a dedicated track weapon and want the unmatched grip of an Öhlins or KW Suspensions coilover system.
But you're worried about the electronics.
"If I unplug the magnetic shocks, won't my car go into limp mode?"
The answer is: It depends on how you do it.
If you just rip them out and leave the plugs dangling? Yes. You'll trigger a massive "Suspension Fault" on your dashboard and lose access to your selectable Drive Modes.
But if you use a premium Electronic Damping Cancellation (EDC) Kit, you can run any mechanical coilover you want with zero errors.
In this guide, we explain exactly how these plug-and-play "Deleter Kits" from KW Suspensions work, why premium European coilovers don't come with noisy camber plates, and why ditching the magnetic ride might be the smartest move for your track build.

Frequently Asked Questions (Coilovers)
Will I get a "Check Engine" or "Suspension Fault" light if I remove my MagneRide?
Yes, unless you use a Deleter Kit.
The MagneRide system is deeply integrated into the S550's stability control. If you unplug the factory shocks to install aftermarket coilovers, the car assumes the suspension has failed catastrophically. You must install a MagneRide Cancellation Kit (available from KW Suspensions), which plugs directly into the factory harness and simulates the electrical resistance of the stock shock, keeping the computer perfectly happy.
Do I need Camber Plates if I install coilovers?
Yes, if you plan to lower the car significantly.
When you lower an S550 Mustang more than 1.5 inches, the front wheels naturally tilt inward (creating negative camber). While great for cornering, excessive camber will destroy your street tires in a few months. Because premium kits from KW and Öhlins often reuse your quiet factory top mounts, we highly recommend purchasing a set of adjustable Camber Plates from Whiteline to get your alignment back into perfect, street-legal specification.
How hard is the installation?
Medium to Advanced.
Installing coilovers on the S550 takes about 4–6 hours in a well-equipped garage. You have to remove the heavy factory struts and disassemble portions of the rear interior trunk panels to access the rear shock towers. You will absolutely need a professional alignment immediately after installation to ensure the car drives safely.
