Quad vs. Projector: How to Choose the Right Headlights for Your RAM 1500
Share
You can’t see the road.
You’re driving your 2009–2018 RAM 1500 at night, and the headlights are so dim you have to check if they are even on.
You’re ready for an upgrade. You want those sleek AlphaRex or Morimoto lights with the cool DRL bars.
But before you buy, you have to answer one question:
"Does your truck have Quad or Projector headlights?"
If you answer wrong, the new lights won't plug in.
- Quad Headlights: The basic chrome reflectors found on Express and Tradesman trims.
- Projector Headlights: The premium "eyeball" lights found on Laramie and Sport trims.
The wiring harnesses are completely different. If you have a "Quad" truck and buy "Projector" lights without the conversion harness, you’re stuck.
In this guide, we show you how to identify your stock lights instantly and explain which aftermarket upgrades give you the best beam pattern for the money.

Frequently Asked Questions (Headlights)
I have "Quad" lights. Can I install "Projector" style lights?
Yes, but you need an adapter.
The wiring plug on a Quad truck is different from a Projector truck.
- AlphaRex & Morimoto: Most of their kits include a "Converter Harness" or ask you to select your stock headlight type at checkout so they can send the right plug.
- Cheap eBay Lights: Often do not include this adapter, leaving you with a light you can't plug in.
Why do my new lights flicker?
The RAM's computer sends a pulsing voltage to the headlights to check for burnt bulbs. Halogen filaments are slow and hide this pulse. LEDs respond instantly, so they show the pulse as a strobe/flicker.
- Solution: Ensure your headlights have Anti-Flicker Modules (Capacitors) installed. Quality brands like Morimoto build this into the housing.
Do these headlights have the "Sequential" Turn Signal?
Most premium models do.
- AlphaRex NOVA/LUXX: Yes, they feature a "chasing" amber turn signal.
- Morimoto XB: Yes, usually switchable (you can choose sequential or standard blink).
- OE Style: No, they blink like standard factory lights.
