Quad vs. Projector: How to Choose the Right LED Bulbs for Your RAM 1500

You can’t see at night.

The factory halogen bulbs in your 2009–2018 RAM 1500 are notoriously dim.

So, you go to buy a set of LED bulbs.

But then the website asks: "Do you have Quad or Projector headlights?"

If you answer wrong, the bulbs won't fit.

  • Quad Headlights: Found on Tradesman, Express, and SLT models. They have two separate bulbs inside chrome reflectors.
  • Projector Headlights: Found on Laramie, Sport, and Longhorn models. They have a single "eyeball" lens.

And even if you pick the right size, you face the second boss battle: The RAM Flicker.

RAM trucks use a "Pulse Width Modulation" system that causes cheap LEDs to strobe like a disco ball.

In this guide, we show you how to identify your housing type in seconds and explain why you must use Canbus-ready decoders to get steady, bright light on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions (Lighting)

Why do my new LEDs flicker or turn off?

This is the "RAM Canbus" issue. The truck sends a pulsing electrical signal to the bulbs to check if they are working. Because LEDs use so little power, the truck thinks the bulb is burned out and cuts the power (or the pulse causes the LED to strobe). You need to install a PWM Anti-Flicker Module (Decoder) between the factory plug and the new LED bulb to fix this.

Can I put Projector headlights on my "Quad" truck?

Yes, but you need a conversion harness.

If your truck came with Quad (reflector) headlights, the wiring plug is different than the Projector style. Brands like Morimoto and AlphaRex sell complete headlight assemblies that come with the necessary adapters to plug a projector housing into a "Quad" truck harness.

What is the difference between "Reflector" and "Projector"?

  • Reflector (Quad): Uses a chrome bowl to bounce light onto the road. The beam is scattered and less precise.
  • Projector: Uses a lens to focus the light into a sharp, controlled beam. This provides better distance visibility without blinding oncoming drivers.
