Resonator Delete vs. Muffler Delete: Which RAM 1500 Mod is Right for You?
Share
You want your 2009–2018 RAM 1500 to sound like a truck, not a sedan.
But you aren't sure if you should mess with the Muffler (the big suitcase in the middle) or the Resonators (the small cans at the back).
Here is the difference:
- Muffler Delete: Massive volume increase. Deep rumble. High risk of highway drone.
- Resonator Delete: Moderate volume increase (15-20%). Raspier tone. Low risk of drone (if you keep the stock muffler).
For many owners, the Resonator Delete is the "Goldilocks" mod—it gives you a nice bark when you step on it, but keeps the cabin quiet enough for family road trips. Plus, it cleans up the rear end by removing those ugly hanging cans.
In this guide, we explain how to install a resonator delete kit and why pairing it with 5-Inch Carven Tips is the ultimate rear-end makeover for your RAM.

Frequently Asked Questions (Axle-Backs)
What does a Resonator Delete actually do?
The factory resonators (the small mufflers near the exhaust tips) are designed to cancel out specific high-pitched frequencies. Replacing them with straight pipes (a Resonator Delete) allows more of the raw engine tone to come through. It typically makes the truck 15-20% louder and gives it a raspier, more aggressive bark on cold starts.
Will 5-inch tips change the sound?
Slightly. While tips are primarily cosmetic, a large 5-inch echo chamber can deepen the tone slightly at idle, making it sound a bit "throatier." However, they will not make the truck significantly louder like a muffler swap would.
Do I need to weld these on?
No.
- Tips: almost always clamp on. You simply loosen the ball-clamp on the factory tip, slide it off, and slide the new one on.
- Resonator Deletes: Usually require one cut per side behind the rear axle to remove the factory resonator assembly. The new pipes then clamp onto the existing pipe.
