You bought the Badlands or Black Diamond Bronco because you wanted the off-road capability. It came with those tough-looking heavy-duty Rock Rails to protect the body.
That’s great for the trail.
But then your spouse tries to get in. Or your kids try to climb into the back seat.
And you realize: Rock Rails are terrible steps. They are tucked too tight to the body and offer zero foothold.
So you want to add Running Boards. But here is the catch: You usually can't have both.
To install comfortable steps, you generally have to unbolt your factory armor.
In this guide, we explore the trade-off between "Step" and "Slide." We’ll look at Drop Steps that make entry easy (but ruin your clearance) and Frame-Mounted Sliders that can take a beating (but barely help you climb in).

Frequently Asked Questions (Running Boards)
Can I keep my factory rock rails and add steps?
Usually, No. Most aftermarket running boards use the exact same mounting location (the rocker panel and pinch weld) as the factory rock rails. You have to unbolt the rock rails to bolt on the steps. Exceptions exist: There are a few "Clamp-On" steps that attach to the rock rail, but they are less common and often rattle.
Do running boards reduce ground clearance?
Yes. Fixed running boards (especially Drop Steps) hang lower than the frame, meaning they are the first thing to hit a rock off-road. If you do serious rock crawling, we recommend Rock Sliders (which are armored and sit high) or AMP Research Power Steps (which retract up out of the way).
What is the weight rating?
Most high-quality steel steps (Go Rhino, N-Fab, Westin) are rated for 300–500 lbs per side. They bolt directly to the body mounting points and are sturdy enough for heavy use. Cheap aluminum universal steps may flex under weight—we only stock vehicle-specific steel or reinforced aluminum boards.
