Rubber vs. BedRug: Which F-150 Bed Mat Matches Your Job?
Share
The bed of your 2021–2025 Ford F-150 is tough, but it isn't indestructible. And frankly, it’s not very comfortable, either.
If you crawl into your bed to unload gear, you know the pain of kneeling on the relentless ridges of the aluminum floor (or the sandpaper texture of a spray-in liner). If you haul groceries or toolboxes, you know the sound of them slamming into the front of the bed every time you hit the brakes.
You need a bed mat. But do you go with the classic Heavy-Duty Rubber or the modern, carpet-like BedRug?
It comes down to how you use your truck. Are you throwing greasy engine parts and cinder blocks in the back? Or are you hauling camping gear, dogs, and fragile electronics?
In this guide, we compare the durability, grip, and comfort of the top bed mat options to help you decide which one belongs in your F-150.

Frequently Asked Questions (Bed Mats)
Will water get trapped under the mat and rust my bed?
No.
- The 2021+ F-150 has an aluminum bed, so it will not rust like steel.
- Quality mats (like DeeZee) have "knobbies" on the bottom to elevate the mat slightly, allowing water to drain out toward the tailgate and air to circulate, preventing mold.
Why buy a mat if I already have a spray-in liner?
Impact & Grip. A spray-in liner is a thin, hard coating. If you drop a heavy brick, it can still dent the aluminum floor beneath. A 3/8" thick rubber mat absorbs that shock. Furthermore, spray-in liners are slippery when wet; a rubber mat keeps your load secure in corners.
Can I install a BedRug if I have a drop-in plastic liner?
No. Bed mats are designed to sit on the metal floor (or spray-in liner). A plastic drop-in liner changes the shape and dimensions of the floor too much. You would need to remove the plastic liner to install a rubber mat or BedRug.
