SCT X4 vs. Edge CTS3: Which F150 Tuner Fits Your Build?

You’ve added the lift. You’ve added the bigger tires. But now your 2015–2020 Ford F-150 feels... sluggish.

The speedometer is reading 5 MPH slow. The transmission is hunting for gears because the shift points are confused by the new tire size. And if you have an EcoBoost, you know there is a monster amount of horsepower locked away inside those turbos, limited by the factory computer.

The solution is a Performance Tuner.

But looking at the options can be confusing. Do you need a simple Handheld Programmer (like the SCT X4) that you use once and throw in the glovebox? Or do you need a full Touchscreen Monitor (like the Edge CTS3) that mounts to your windshield and displays boost, transmission temps, and EGTs in real-time?

In this guide, we compare the features, custom tuning capabilities, and screen interfaces of the top tuners on the market to help you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions (Tuners)

Will a tuner improve my gas mileage?

Maybe, but don't count on it. While tuners can optimize air/fuel ratios for efficiency, the reality is that the added horsepower usually makes you drive more aggressively. Most owners see the same MPG or a slight drop due to a heavier foot. However, the "Economy" tunes provided can squeeze out 1-2 MPG on long highway trips if you drive conservatively.

Can I tow with a performance tune?

NO. Never tow heavy loads on a "Performance" or "Race" tune. These tunes advance timing and lean out the fuel mixture, which causes high cylinder temperatures. If you are towing, you MUST switch to the specific "Tow/Haul" tune included on the device, which adds power safely while keeping the transmission torque converter locked for cooling.

What octane gas do I need?

It depends on the tune you select.

  • 87 Tune: Safe for regular gas.
  • 91/93 Tune: You MUST run premium fuel. If you run 87 gas on a 93 tune, your engine will knock (detonate) and WILL suffer catastrophic damage.
