Short Bed, Long Haul: How to Carry 8-Foot Cargo in a 6.75-Foot F350
Share
The 6.75-foot Short Bed is the most popular configuration for the 2023–2025 Ford F350. It makes the truck easier to park and fits in a standard garage (barely).
But the moment you go to the hardware store to buy 4x8 sheets of plywood, or try to load a full-size ATV, you realize the compromise you made. The tailgate has to come down, and your cargo is hanging off the edge, secured only by hope and a bungee cord.
Enter the Bed Extender.
This simple aluminum cage flips outward onto your open tailgate, instantly giving you over 8 feet of enclosed, secure cargo space. It turns your Short Bed into a Long Bed when you need it, and flips back inside to organize your groceries when you don't.
In this guide, we compare the top extenders (U-Shape vs. V-Shape) and cover the critical installation step that owners with the Ford Tailgate Step often miss.

Frequently Asked Questions (Bed Extenders)
Will this work with my Tonneau Cover?
Yes. Most bed extenders mount to the side pillars of the bed wall, sitting lower than the bed rails. They fit under almost all roll-up and folding tonneau covers. Note: If you have a Retractable cover (with a canister), check the clearance near the front of the bed if you plan to flip the extender inward.
Does it rattle while driving?
No. High-quality extenders (like AMP Research) use a latching system that locks the cage firmly against the tailgate latches (when open) or the wheel wells (when closed). They also include rubber bumpers to prevent metal-on-metal contact.
How quickly can I remove it?
If you need the full open bed for a load of gravel or a 5th wheel, the entire extender assembly can be removed in seconds. You simply tilt it to a 45-degree angle and lift it out of the quick-release brackets. No tools required.
