The Art of the Chrome Delete: How to Black Out Your 2015–2020 F150
Share
If you bought an XLT or Lariat 2015–2020 Ford F-150, chances are it came with the "Chrome Package."
Chrome door handles. Chrome mirror caps. Chrome fender badges. Chrome everywhere.
For a classic look, it's great. But for a modern, aggressive sport truck, the chrome has to go.
The "Chrome Delete" is one of the most popular projects for 13th Gen owners. But you have a choice to make: Overlay vs. Replacement.
Do you buy the inexpensive Gloss Black ABS covers that stick right over your existing chrome? Or do you spend the money on painted replacement parts that require prying off the old ones?
In this guide, we explore the best ways to black out your handles, badges, and emblems, and warn you about the specific fitment traps—like the "Smart Key" sensors and Front Cameras—that catch most owners off guard.

Frequently Asked Questions (Trim & Badges)
How do I remove the factory fender badges?
It takes force. The factory clips are very strong. We recommend using plastic trim removal tools (not metal screwdrivers, which scratch paint) and a heat gun to soften the adhesive tape behind the badge. Warning: The alignment pins on the old badge will likely snap off during removal. This is normal.
Will handle covers block my keyless entry?
Not if you buy the right ones. Covers designed for "Intelligent Access" have a precise cutout for the touch sensor. However, cheap generic covers might cover this sensor, rendering the touch-to-unlock feature useless. Always check the product description for "Smart Key Compatible."
Can I install the glowing "Illuminated" emblems?
Yes, but it requires wiring. Illuminated Ford ovals (which glow white or red) are not plug-and-play. You will need to tap into the headlight harness (for the front) or the license plate light circuit (for the rear) to power them.
Delete the chrome.
