The Chrome Delete Guide: How to Black Out Your RAM 1500 the Right Way

You love your 2009–2018 RAM 1500, but you hate the "Old Man Chrome."

The door handles are chrome. The mirrors are chrome. The massive "RAM 1500" and "HEMI" badges on the side are chrome.

It’s too shiny. You want that sleek, aggressive Night Edition or Rebel look.

You have two options:

  1. Pay a shop: Vinyl wrap or paint matching ($1,000+).
  2. Do it yourself: Black Badge Kits and Trim Overlays ($150).

The DIY route is easier than you think. With a set of Gloss Black Handle Covers and a Matte Black Emblem Kit, you can completely transform the look of your truck in an afternoon.

But there is a catch: Adhesive Prep.

If you don't remove the old wax and residue correctly, your new badges will fly off on the highway.

In this guide, we show you the difference between "Overlays" and "Replacements" and teach you the Eraser Wheel Trick to remove old adhesive in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions (Badges)

How do I remove the old factory badges?

The safest method is to use a heat gun (or hair dryer) to soften the adhesive, then use fishing line to "saw" behind the emblem. Once the plastic is off, you will be left with a sticky foam residue. We highly recommend using a Rubber Eraser Wheel (on a drill) to remove this residue in seconds without scratching the paint.

Will the black overlays fall off in a car wash?

Not if installed correctly.

  • Preparation is key: You must clean the surface with alcohol to remove all wax and grease before applying the overlay.
  • Temperature: Install on a warm day (above 60°F) so the 3M tape bonds properly.
  • If prepped right, Handle and Mirror Overlays will survive automatic car washes for years.

Are these genuine Mopar parts?

We offer both Genuine Mopar (OEM) badges for the purists and Aftermarket (Reproduction) kits for those on a budget. Mopar badges ensure 100% correct sizing and longevity, while aftermarket kits offer a huge visual upgrade for a fraction of the price. Check the product title for "OEM" designation.
