The RAM 1500 "Classic" Trap: How to Buy the Right Tonneau Cover (2019-2024)

You own a 2021 RAM 1500. You order a bed cover online. It arrives, you try to install it, and... it's 2 inches too wide.

What happened?

You likely fell into the "Classic vs. New Body" trap.

Unlike most manufacturers who switch to a new model and stop making the old one, RAM did something unique. When they released the new body style in 2019 (the "DT" platform), they kept making the old one (the "DS" platform) and renamed it the RAM 1500 Classic.

They are still selling the "Classic" today.

This means a 2021 RAM 1500 could be Old Body OR New Body, and the bed covers are NOT interchangeable.

  • RAM 1500 Classic: Uses 2009–2018 parts. (5-Lug Wheels).
  • RAM 1500 New Body: Uses 2019+ parts. (6-Lug Wheels).

In this guide, we show you exactly how to identify your truck's generation and choose the perfect cover, whether you need the budget-friendly Tyger T3 or the heavy-duty BAKFlip MX4.

Frequently Asked Questions (RAM Covers)

How do I know if I have the "Classic" body style?

The easiest way is to look at your wheels.

  • 5-Lug Wheels: You have a Classic (DS Platform). You need a 2009–2018 cover (this collection).
  • 6-Lug Wheels: You have a New Body (DT Platform). You need a 2019+ cover.
  • Note: All RAM 2500/3500 Heavy Duty trucks use different covers entirely.

Will these fit if I have the RamBox system?

No. If your truck has the lockable storage bins built into the bed rails (RamBox), the bed width is significantly narrower. You must buy a cover specifically titled "For RamBox" or it will not fit.

How do I measure my bed length?

Measure from the inside of the bulkhead (front of bed) to the inside of the tailgate (when closed).

  • ~67 inches: You have the 5' 7" Short Bed.
  • ~76 inches: You have the 6' 4" Standard Bed.
  • ~96 inches: You have the 8' 0" Long Bed.

Stop guessing. Get the right fit.
