The RamBox Dilemma: Why Standard Bed Accessories Won't Fit Your RAM 1500
Share
You just purchased a gorgeous 2019–2026 RAM 1500 Limited fully loaded with the RamBox Cargo Management System.
It’s an undeniably incredible feature—lockable, illuminated, and drainable storage bins built right into your exterior bed rails.
But now you want to actually use the truck bed. You want to add an AMP Research BedXtender for your dirt bike, or a heavy-duty Husky Liners Bed Mat to stop your pelican cases from violently sliding around while you drive. You buy one, excitedly try to install it in the driveway, and immediately realize... it’s way too wide.
The RamBox is both a blessing and a curse.
While it gives you unmatched exterior side storage, it narrows the actual interior floor of the truck bed significantly.
- Standard Bed Width: ~66 inches (wall to wall).
- RamBox Bed Width: ~50 inches (wall to wall).
Because of this massive 16-inch difference in interior space, almost none of the standard aftermarket bed accessories will fit. A standard heavy-duty rubber bed mat will severely curl up the sides. A standard aluminum bed extender won't even come close to touching the factory mounting points.
In this guide, we break down the width differences, list the specific part numbers for RamBox-Compatible accessories, and help you find the premium gear that actually fits your specialized truck.

Frequently Asked Questions (Bed Accessories)
Can I install an UnderCover SwingCase if my RAM has the RamBox?
No, you cannot.
The UnderCover SwingCase is brilliantly designed to tuck perfectly into the empty, wasted space located directly behind the wheel well. On a RamBox-equipped truck, that exact space is physically filled by the inner wall of the storage compartment. There is physically no room for the SwingCase to mount or hinge.
Will the AMP Research BedStep actually work with my factory Dual Exhaust?
Yes, but you must select the correct part number.
AMP Research manufactures two highly specific versions of the BedStep for the RAM 1500:
- For Dual Exhaust: The cast-aluminum bracket is engineered to safely curve around the hot exhaust tip.
-
For Single Exhaust: The bracket mounts tighter and straighter.
(Note: If your truck features the Multi-Function Tailgate, you need a highly specialized step bracket—usually AMP #75328-01A—that clears the complex barn-door swing mechanism).
Do I really need a Bed Extender if I have the 5'7" Short Bed?
If you haul motorcycles, ATVs, or lumber, absolutely.
The 5'7" bed is exceptionally short. A standard dirt bike simply will not fit with the tailgate closed. The AMP Research BedXtender HD Max acts as a heavy-duty cage, allowing you to drive safely with the tailgate down. It gives you an extra ~2 feet of enclosed, secure cargo space to haul your bike or 8-foot sheets of plywood without worrying about them sliding out onto the highway.
