The S550 "RTR" Look: How to Install Premium Grille Lights on Your Mustang
Share
You’ve seen it a thousand times at night.
An S550 Mustang looms out of the darkness in your rearview mirror. You can’t see the paint color, but you instantly recognize those two menacing, glowing triangles illuminating the upper grille.
It’s the aggressive "RTR" style, and it is arguably the single most defining front-end modification for the 2015–2023 Mustang generation.
You want that exact look for your GT, EcoBoost, or Mach 1. But before you start cutting into your factory wiring, you have questions.
Do I need to buy a whole new grille, or do I cut my factory one? Do I really have to take my front bumper off? And most importantly, how do I wire these lights so they are 50-state legal and turn on automatically with my headlights?
If you want the cleanest, most reliable fit, you need a full replacement grille featuring pre-installed, premium LED boards from brands like ORACLE Lighting or Diode Dynamics.
In this guide, we walk you through the difference between cheap "Cut-In" LED vents and full engineered Grille Assemblies, why removing your bumper is easier than you think, and exactly which wire to tap so your new nostrils glow a street-legal White or Amber every time you unlock the doors.

Frequently Asked Questions (Accent Lighting)
How hard is it to install illuminated Grille Lights?
It takes some time, but it is straightforward.
To replace the upper grille on an S550 Mustang, you must remove the front bumper. While it sounds intimidating, it is actually a very simple process involving a series of plastic push-clips and standard 7mm/8mm bolts. Once the bumper is off, the factory grille unclips, the new LED grille snaps in, and you use the provided plug-and-play harness to tap into your parking lights. Plan for about 2 hours in your driveway.
Will an RGBW lighting kit drain my Mustang's battery?
Not if wired correctly using switched power.
Premium kits from Diode Dynamics and ORACLE draw very little power and utilize smart Bluetooth controllers. However, if you wire them directly to the battery ("Always On"), they will eventually drain it. You must always wire accent lights to an "Ignition Switched" fuse (a fuse that only receives power when the engine is running) so they cannot be left on by accident when you park the car.
Can I match these aftermarket lights to my factory "MyColor" dash?
Yes, easily.
If your Mustang Premium has the factory MyColor system, you can use the Bluetooth smartphone app included with your premium footwell or engine bay kit to dial in the exact HEX color code to perfectly match your dashboard and ambient interior lighting.
