The Sensor Delete Trap: Why Your New Bumper is Screaming at You

You finally decided to upgrade the front of your 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. You want massive off-road protection, so you order a heavy-duty, 3/16-inch plate steel bumper.

You spend your entire Saturday unbolting the flimsy factory chrome, wrestling the massive 200-pound steel armor onto the frame horns, and tightening the bolts. It looks absolutely terrifying and incredible. You jump into the driver's seat, turn the key, and put the truck in drive.

Instantly, your dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, and a deafening, continuous collision alarm starts blaring inside the cab.

You just fell directly into the Sensor Delete Trap.

Your premium GMC Sierra is equipped with highly sensitive, factory parking sonar sensors integrated directly into the plastic of the original bumper. Because you bought a heavy-duty steel bumper that didn't have laser-cut sensor holes, you either left the sensors dangling behind the steel, or you unplugged them completely. Now, your truck's computer thinks you are permanently crashing into a brick wall.

You don't have to take a heavy-duty drill to 3/16-inch plate steel; you just need to buy smart armor.

In this guide, we explain exactly how elite fabrication engineers at Fab Fours and ADD Offroad design premium bumpers with precise, pre-cut sensor housings that allow you to easily snap your factory electronics right into the new steel. We'll show you why you need a leveling kit to handle the weight, how to mount an off-road winch, and how to safely armor your Sierra.

Frequently Asked Questions (Heavy-Duty Bumpers)

Do I have to cut my GMC Sierra's frame to install a steel bumper?

Usually no, they are 100% bolt-on.

Premium bumpers from ADD, Fab Fours, and Westin are designed to utilize the factory frame horn mounting locations. You simply unbolt the factory bumper, slide the heavy-duty brackets onto the bare frame, and bolt the new armor directly in place using heavy-duty Grade 8 hardware. Note: Always have a friend or a floor jack help you lift the new bumper!

Will a massive steel bumper block airflow and cause my Sierra to overheat?

Not if you buy a premium, engineered brand.

Cheap steel bumpers are just solid walls of metal that block your radiator and transmission cooler. Elite fabrication brands specifically design their bumpers with massive, laser-cut ventilation grilles and mesh inserts in the center and lower sections to ensure your V8 gets the exact same (or better) cooling airflow as the factory setup.

Can I add a winch to my bumper later?

Only if you buy a "Winch Ready" bumper.

You cannot safely weld or bolt a winch tray onto a standard, non-winch bumper after the fact. Winch bumpers are engineered from the ground up with massive, 1/4-inch steel sub-frames tied directly into the truck's chassis to handle the 12,000 lbs of pulling force. If you think you might want a winch in the future, you must buy a winch-compatible bumper today.
