The Square Fender Trap: Why Your New Wheels Are Rubbing on Your GMC Sierra
Share
You just installed a premium 2-inch leveling kit on your brand-new 2019–2026 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. The truck looks perfectly level, so you go online and order the most aggressive wheel package you can find: a stunning set of 20x10 Dirty Life wheels with a massive -24mm offset, wrapped in heavy 33-inch mud tires.
You bolt them on in the driveway, and the stance is absolutely dominating. The tires poke two inches past the fenders.
You hop in the driver's seat, put the truck in reverse, and turn the steering wheel to back out of your driveway. Instantly, you hear a horrific, crunching sound of tearing plastic and scraping metal. You get out and realize your massive new tires have violently ripped out your inner fender liner and are pinned directly against your steel cab corner.
You just fell directly into the Square Fender Trap.
Unlike older trucks with massive, round, open wheel arches, modern GMC Sierras are engineered with highly restrictive, square wheel wells for aerodynamics. When you buy wheels with a heavy negative offset, it drastically widens the turning arc of the tire, guaranteeing it will crash into your truck's body panels unless you are running a massive 6-inch lift kit.
You don't have to sacrifice your stance; you just need to understand offset geometry.
In this guide, we explain exactly how premium wheel engineers at Method Race Wheels and Raceline use specific offset numbers to clear your suspension without ruining your fenders. We'll show you why a 0mm offset is the "sweet spot" for leveled trucks, why factory lug nuts won't fit, and how to safely navigate the frustrating GM wheel well architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions (Wheels)
If I buy 20x10 wheels with a -24mm offset, will they rub on a leveling kit?
Yes, violently.
This is the biggest mistake Sierra owners make. GMC engineered the wheel wells to be very square. A massive -24mm offset pushes the wheel so far outward that when you turn the steering wheel, the outer edge of the tire swings in a massive arc, immediately crashing into your plastic mud flaps, the front bumper, and the metal cab corner. To run wide, negative-offset wheels, you generally need a true 4-inch to 6-inch suspension lift, or you must be prepared to cut your truck's sheet metal.
Do I need Hub-Centric Rings for my aftermarket wheels?
It is highly recommended.
The Sierra 1500 has a factory hub center bore of 78.1mm. If your aftermarket wheels have a larger center bore (like 106mm or 108mm), the wheel will be entirely supported by the lug studs (lug-centric). While safe, this can sometimes cause slight highway vibrations. Installing cheap plastic or aluminum "Hub-Centric Rings" perfectly centers the wheel on the hub, guaranteeing a glass-smooth highway ride.
Can I transfer my factory Tire Pressure Sensors (TPMS) to my new wheels?
Yes, in almost all cases.
Premium aftermarket wheels from Method, Dirty Life, and Raceline are engineered to accept standard OEM TPMS sensors. Your local tire shop simply unbolts the sensors from your factory wheels and installs them onto the new wheels before mounting the tires. Your dashboard will continue to read your exact tire pressures perfectly.
