The Trailer Plug Trap: Why Your New Tailgate Light Bar is Throwing Codes

You want to modernize the rear profile of your 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500, so you order a premium, massive 60-inch LED tailgate light bar. You unbox it, clean the gap above your bumper, use the heavy-duty 3M tape to secure it, and then simply plug the 4-pin connector directly into your truck's factory trailer plug.

The light bar looks incredible. But the second you put your truck into reverse, your dashboard lights up with a warning chime. Your backup camera shuts down, and your rear parking sensors are completely disabled.

You just fell directly into the Trailer Plug Trap.

Modern K2XX GMC Sierras are equipped with highly advanced "Smart" towing systems. The absolute second the truck's computer senses an electrical draw from the 4-pin trailer harness on the bumper, it assumes you just hooked up a boat or a camper. To prevent your truck from constantly slamming on the brakes or beeping at the trailer behind you, the computer automatically kills your rear safety sensors.

You don't have to return your massive light bar; you just need to wire it correctly.

In this guide, we explain exactly how to hardwire your tailgate bar behind the taillights to bypass the trailer computer. We'll show you why elite electrical engineers at Putco use fully sealed resin to prevent water damage, why Recon cab lights require drilling your roof, and how to safely install custom accent lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions (Accent Lighting)

Do I have to drill holes in my roof to install Recon Cab Lights?

Yes, if your truck didn't come with them from the factory.

Because the 1500 Sierra does not feature factory cab lights, there are no pre-existing holes. You must lower the interior headliner, use the provided template to measure perfectly, and drill holes directly through the sheet metal of your roof to run the wiring and mount the lights. You MUST use high-quality automotive silicone to seal the hardware and prevent water leaks.

How do I install Oracle Rock Lights without causing an electrical fire?

You must use an inline fuse and a heavy-duty relay.

Never run raw power wires directly from the battery to a set of LED pods without protection. Premium kits include a dedicated wiring harness with a built-in inline fuse and a relay switch. If a rock strikes the light and causes a short, the $2 fuse will safely pop, protecting your truck's expensive computer from a catastrophic power surge.

Will a tailgate light bar block my spare tire access hole?

Usually no, but you must mount it carefully.

On the K2XX Sierra, the small access tube to lower your spare tire sits directly in the gap between the tailgate and the bumper. When installing a premium Putco Blade, simply use the heavy-duty 3M tape and mounting clips to position the light bar slightly above or below that access hole to ensure you aren't stranded with a flat tire.

Stand out. Wire it right.
