The V4 Mode Trap: Why Active Fuel Management is Ruining Your Sierra
Share
You are cruising down the highway in your 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500. You go to pass a slow-moving semi-truck, so you push the gas pedal to the floor. Instead of an instant, terrifying surge of 5.3L V8 American muscle, the truck hesitates. It shudders slightly, hesitates for a full second, and then clumsily downshifts before finally accelerating.
If you previously installed an aftermarket exhaust, that hesitation was accompanied by a terrible, helicopter-like droning sound that vibrated the entire cab.
You just fell directly into the V4 Mode Trap.
To meet federal fuel economy mandates, General Motors equipped the K2XX EcoTec3 engines with Active Fuel Management (AFM). When you cruise at a steady speed, the computer shuts down the oil pressure to the lifters on four of your cylinders. You are literally driving a massive, heavy-duty truck on a 4-cylinder engine. When you step on the gas, the engine has to frantically re-engage those cylinders, creating terrible throttle lag and massive valvetrain wear.
You don't have to live with a sluggish, hesitating truck; you just need to override the computer.
In this guide, we explain exactly how elite programmers at Edge Products allow you to permanently disable the AFM system, locking your truck into pure V8 mode forever. We'll show you why a fully enclosed S&B Cold Air Intake is required to actually feed that V8, how to fix your speedometer for larger tires, and how to safely wake up your Sierra.

Frequently Asked Questions (Engine & Performance)
Will installing a Cold Air Intake void my GMC powertrain warranty?
No, absolutely not.
Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealership cannot void your vehicle's warranty simply because you installed an aftermarket intake. They would have to legally prove that the intake directly caused the engine failure. Premium intakes from S&B and aFe utilize factory-grade MAF sensor mounts and will not trigger a Check Engine Light.
Do I have to run premium 93-octane gas if I install an Edge Tuner?
Only if you select the "Extreme" or "Performance" tune files.
Premium tuners come pre-loaded with multiple files. If you load the "Economy" or "Tow" tune, you can safely run standard 87-octane fuel. However, if you want to unlock the absolute maximum horsepower the 5.3L or 6.2L can produce, you must load the "Performance" tune and run 91 or 93-octane fuel to prevent engine knock.
Can a tuner correct my speedometer if I installed 35-inch mud tires?
Yes, it is one of the most important features.
If you installed a lift kit and massive tires, your factory speedometer is highly inaccurate, and your transmission is shifting at the wrong times because it doesn't know the tire size changed. An Edge CTS3 allows you to input your exact new tire diameter, instantly recalibrating your speedometer and fixing your transmission shift points.
