To Drill or Not to Drill: The Ultimate 2023+ F350 Roof Rack Guide

The 2023–2025 Ford F350 is a giant vehicle, but surprisingly, it can run out of storage space quickly. Once the bed is full of tools, a 5th wheel hitch, or camping gear, where do you put the long stuff? Where do you mount the recovery boards or the rooftop tent?

The answer is the roof. But putting a rack on a Super Duty isn't as simple as it is on an SUV with factory rails. Ford did not provide mounting points in the rain gutters.

This leaves owners with a difficult choice: Clamp-On Crossbars (easy, but low weight capacity) or Drill-In Platform Racks (heavy duty, but scary to install).

In this guide, we break down the pros and cons of both systems. We explain what "Dynamic Weight Rating" actually means, why you need a wind deflector, and walk you through the reality of drilling Rivnuts into your brand-new $90,000 truck (spoiler: it’s not as bad as you think).

Frequently Asked Questions (Roof Racks)

Do I really have to drill into my roof?

For a "Platform Style" rack (like Prinsu or Sherpa), Yes. The F350 does not have factory mounting points in the rain gutters. To support the weight of a tent or heavy gear safely, you must install Rivnuts (threaded inserts) into the roof structure. If you are not comfortable doing this, we recommend a professional 4x4 shop installation.

Will a roof rack increase wind noise?

Yes, anything you put into the airstream creates noise. However, premium racks include an Aerodynamic Wind Deflector (fairing) at the front that pushes air over the rack. This significantly reduces the "whistle" and drag compared to cheap, square-bar racks.

Can I use a car wash?

  • Platform Racks: Generally Yes, for "Touchless" washes. Avoid brush washes as the bristles can get caught in the crossbars and rip them off.
  • Clamp-On Crossbars: We recommend Removing them before any automatic car wash to prevent damage to the door seals and the rack itself.
