X-Pipe vs. H-Pipe: Which Resonator Delete Sounds Best on the Coyote 5.0?
Share
You just bought a 2015–2023 Mustang GT.
You start it up, expecting the earth to shake.
Instead, it sounds... polite. Like a family sedan.
The culprit is the "Suitcase"—a massive, heavy factory resonator designed to kill drone and volume.
You want to cut it out. But now you have a choice: X-Pipe or H-Pipe.
They both cost about the same. They both replace the resonator. They both require cutting your factory exhaust.
But the sound? Completely different.
- The H-Pipe: Gives you that deep, subterranean burble at idle. It sounds like a classic 1960s muscle car.
- The X-Pipe: Smoothes out the pulses and creates a high-pitched, exotic shriek at high RPMs. It sounds like a race car.
In this guide, we compare the frequency and tone of both styles to help you decide which voice matches your build.

Frequently Asked Questions (Mid-Pipes)
Will a Resonator Delete void my warranty?
Generally, no.
A mid-pipe is installed after the catalytic converters. Because you are not removing emissions equipment (cats), it is 50-state legal in terms of emissions and typically does not void your powertrain warranty. However, it does make the car louder, so check your local noise ordinances.
Do I need a tune after installing an X-Pipe?
No.
Replacing the resonator affects sound much more than airflow. The factory computer can easily adjust to the slight change in flow without a retune. You can bolt it on and drive immediately without check engine lights.
Why does the EcoBoost use a Y-Pipe?
The 2.3L engine has a single turbo downpipe that runs to the middle of the car, where it hits the resonator. The resonator splits that single pipe into two pipes for the rear mufflers. An aftermarket Y-Pipe replaces that resonator, taking the single 3" pipe and splitting it efficiently into dual 2.5" pipes, increasing flow and noise.
